Soooo I borrowed a Mamiya 645 from Brittany & Leo of Rad Red Creative to take to Hawaii this summer. I had a few boxes of 120 film and I was in the mood to play! I got some really cool shots on Kauai and I think it’s safe to say the film bug has bitten me!
I had 2 rolls left after getting back and decided to try some side by side shots out at Hayden & Josh’s beach wedding day. Below are the results! Film is all on the LEFT and digital is all on the RIGHT. I think the best part of the whole experience was actually the giddy anticipation of seeing the results!
Last fall I shot an in home lifestyle family session for Highlight Studios to see how I liked film. You can check it out here. I had it processed with Richard’s photo lab and they were almost perturbed that I wanted color and contrast ha! With the Hawaii film I tried Find lab and they did a great job. For these two rolls I thought why not try yet another lab, this time I went with PhotoVision. I think I have tried them all at this point! A few year back I sent off some film from an old brownie I shot on to Indie. I really like how PhotoVision sends a contact sheet with theirs!
Comparing the images, there is definitely some amazing depth that the film gets but I think my Fuji handled skin tones and the harsh beach conditions better! Yet another reason I am still so in love with my Fuji system. I know there is a huge buzz about mirrorless right now and I just gotta brag…ya girl made the switch almost 2 years ago now! Read my interview about making the switch to mirrorless here.
I’m curious to know what YOU think! For now I’ve decided to keep film as a fun treat for myself. In 2019 I plan to ACTUALLY create time for personal and experimental shoots and I think film will be really exciting to play with. To all of you hybrid shooters out there, my hat is off to you!
